Ageing is our biggest challenge

Ageing is our biggest challenge

Ageing is the biggest challenge as we progress further into the 21st century. It’s a challenge that contains within it a threat; that if we don’t take action quickly enough, in the right kind of way, then what is unquestionably humanity’s greatest success – doubling life expectancy in the last 200 years – could become a real problem.

Last month BBC Breakfast had a week long series on living longer. They covered a wide range of topics but some startling statistics were raised:

  • There are over 20 million people aged 50 years and over, over a third of the total UK population.
  • There are now over 14 million people in the UK aged 60 and above.
  • For the first time in history, there are 11 million people aged 65 or over in the UK.
  • 3 million people are aged 80 or over.
  • In 2010, approximately 40,000 people in the UK turned 65; in 2012, it the figure was about 800,000.
  • There are now more people in the UK aged 60 and above than there are under 18 and more pensioners than children under 16.
  • The number of centenarians living in the UK has risen by 73% over the last decade to 13,350 in 2012.

There are many elderly and lonely people who are quite able to look after themselves, but whose quality of life could be improved with the help of a companion or housekeeper.

With so much talk about the loneliness of older people, it can be a huge relief to know that your loved one is not left on their own, especially if you live a distance away.

If you wish to remain as independent as you can, a companion housekeeper is an ideal solution.
